Migrant Children
CARITAS Shanghai’s Weekend Migrant Education Project (Circle of Hope) helps the children of ethnic Miao families who live in He Qing, a village on the outskirts of Pudong.

Background
Caritas was approached to start an English program for some migrant children living in small and basic villages in He Qing, near Pudong Airport.
The villagers are mainly from the Guizhou Province, the men earn a living by working in the fields while the women take in embroidery work.
Our vision is to open the world for these children, encourage them to look beyond the narrow confines of their migrant village, and to be inspired by opportunities.
We hope that, through our teaching, the children will gain interest and confidence in English, inspire them to further their education, and thereby improve their future prospects and that of their families.
The program is run every Saturday morning from 9:30 – 11:30am at the village. Classes are for 1st to 7th grade children. Volunteers meet in Jin Qiao, Pudong and carpool to the village.
Our volunteers attend a training workshop with Stepping Stones, another volunteer organization in Shanghai, to help form an age-appropriate curriculum and learn best-practices that make a real impact on these children’s ability to learn English vocabulary.
In addition to our weekly teaching sessions, Caritas organizes 2 parties a year for the children, for Christmas and for Chinese New Year.
We also have an annual outing for the children, which is the highlight of their year!
Caritas is continually looking for support for this project, in the form of volunteers to offer their time to teach and play with these children, and also for monetary donations for textbooks and teaching material.
No particular skills required, just a willingness to reach out to these young children, and a once a month commitment on Saturday mornings. Training and teaching material provided.

Volunteer your time – we need adult volunteers to teach the migrant children and teenage volunteers to assist.
Volunteers are also needed when we organize an annual outing for the children.
